100 Things About Me

1. I have a cat named Elia.

2. I knew I would marry my husband the first time I saw him. 

3. It was my second thought.

4. My first thought was "Jesus Christ, that man is huge.  I hope I never have to knit him a sweater."

5.  I have, in fact, knit him several sweaters.

6.  My favorite things to eat are potatoes (all forms), salads and creme brulee.  Not all together.

7.  I hate wearing a watch.

8.  I am neurotically early to everything.

9.  I can go days at a time where all I only eat toast, vegetables and tea. 

10.  I love puns.  I think they’re absolutely fabulous.

11. I am right handed.

12.  I have a brother in the armed forces.  I hate war but I love a soldier.

13.  My favorite movie is Amelie.

14.  I still cry at the end.

15.  My favorite color is blue.

16.  I would rather knit than do almost anything else.

17.  I think good kisses are the most sexy thing a person can do

18.  I do not stay angry for long periods.  I explode and and I’m finished.

19.  My favorite singer is Jackson Browne.

20.  I wear size seven shoes.

21.  And I own many pairs of shoes.

22.  Lots.  I mean it.

23.  Our apartment is a disturbingly neat because I feel cluttered when my home is cluttered.

24.  I have no tolerance for self inflicted drama and misery.

25.  My grandfather died last Black Friday.  I know he watches over me.

26.  I believe in the genuine goodness of humanity.

27.  I love taking up the entire bed myself.

28.  I don’t know anything about classical music but I’d like to learn. 

29.  I used to not like opera, but I'm learning to enjoy it.

30.  I like most music.

31.  I wish people treated each other with more kindness.

32.  My favorite way to relax is a big cup of tea and a few minutes of silence.

33.  I read several newspapers a day.  Online. 

34.  I love doing the NY Times Crossword.  Even and especially when I can’t finish it.

35.  I talk to one or both of my parents almost everyday.

36.  I have a tattoo on my right hip.

37.  I speak fluent Spanish and workable Arabic.  My Arabic used to be as good as my Spanish and I hate that I'm so rusty.

38.  When I sold my car, I was worried about getting to the yarn store.

39.  I can touch my tongue to my nose.  And make duck calls.

40.  I don’t believe in religion.

41.  I do believe in God.

42.  And spirituality.

43.  I believe every person in the world is tinged with the beauty of the divine.

44.  My favorite poem is “A Valediction Forbidding Mourning” by John Donne

45.  I prefer real maple syrup to the fake stuff.

46.  I work hard to stay thin, but I enjoy the exercise.

47.  I gnaw on the inside of my mouth when I get nervous.

48.  I love cinnamon anything: gum, toothpaste, spice, you name it.

49.  Ditto that for ginger.

50.  I honestly believe knowledge is power.

51.  I studied genocide and mass movement in college but now I work in a museum.

52.  I worked a few strange jobs after college, but in hindsight, it's the only way I could have wound up here.

53.  I was never depressed by my genocide research because I always saw humanity triumph over hatred.

54.  My favorite book growing up was Matilda.  It’s still high on the list.

55.  My favorite big person book is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.  Sometimes it’s East of Eden by John Steinbeck.  It depends on what day you catch me.

56.  I don’t eat much fish.  The idea of it makes my skin crawl.  Something about the eyes.

57.  I try to limit my meat consumption to animals who lived happy, healthy lives.

58.  Although I would rather eat vegetables.

59.  I love theater.

60.  I think people who spell theater “theatre” are pretentious.

61.  I am a fiber snob.

62.  I’m a snob about most things, actually.  Taking the bus every day has been humbling.

63.  I used to wait tables in a fancy restaurant.  Every time someone was nasty to me for a twenty dollar tip, I'd want to run after them and tell them to keep their money, I’d rather they just didn’t come back.

64.  I can make fabulous crepes.  No surprise, since I worked in a crepe shop.

65.  I thought very seriously about going to cooking school instead of university.  I decided to go to university because I never want to have to do something I love.

66.  I wish I knew more about wine.

67.  I used to work in a fancy shoe store.  They paid me in shoes.

68.  I don’t like menthol cough drops.

69.  I drink tea, not coffee. In really, really big mugs.

70.  I did all my homework in the library; I get distracted really easily.

71.  I grew up on a farm.

72.  I thought I was a city girl.

73.  I live in the city.

74.  I’m a country girl.

75.  I don’t know how people can go on low-carb diets.  I’d never eat.

76.  I prefer white sauce to red, almost universally.

77.  But my favorite is pink sauce.

78.  My clothes are fairly plain.

79.  But I wear really big jewelry.

80.  Eggs Benedict is my favorite thing for breakfast.

81.  But only because I love Hollandaise sauce.

82.  I don’t actually like Canadian Bacon.

83.  I pick it out.

84.  I have been on remarkably bad first dates.  One of them involved moving a bathtub, another involved him throwing up on my favorite shoes,  and another included my introduction to his friend as "[my] fiance."

85.  I love old-fashioned mail.  Like the kind in a mailbox that you have to physically open.

86. I wear sunblock almost every day. 

87.  I would rather people disagree with me having thought about the issue than agree with me without thinking.

88.  I love pickles.  I can eat them by the jar.

89.  Same with martini olives.

90.  They’re not allowed in my refrigerator.

91.  I had a run in with Tequila while working in Central America.

92.  It took years to be able to drink it again.

93.  I’m terrible about returning emails, phone calls and letters. 

94.  Taking any kind of over the counter medication makes me so spacey and dizzy that I’d rather be sick.

95.  I would manipulate time if I could have a superpower.

96.  I have tiny dents on the side of my nose from wearing reading glasses so much.

97.  I read every night before I go to sleep.

98.  My alarm clock sounds like cathedral bells.  I love it.

99.  I had surgery on both knees before the age of 16.

100.  I never eat orange skittles.
